Or even worse, you’ll be somewhat successful, only to discover you’ve gone completely down the wrong path, and need to do a complete rebuild or two, wasted days/months even years of time, and/or have lost all your data. #FILEMAKER PRO 14 TUTORIAL HOW TO#You’ll quickly discover you just don’t know what to do and/or how to do it. Please don’t open up FileMaker and try to make a database. As of this writing, I have personally never met any of the people, only corresponding via email with a few. Based on your computer experience, some of these steps will go easier than others.Īs a disclaimer I just want to note that I have no financial interest to any websites, forums, people or products I mention. Rather than describe every mistake I made, I would rather tell you what I feel would be a better way if I were starting over. I don’t know the marketing genius who purposely or accidentally made that happen, but I clicked the link, read the article, and decided that FileMaker would be perfect for me. The first result was their website, and the second result was “Why is FileMaker better than Microsoft Access”. I went online, typed in ‘Microsoft Access’. Because I enjoyed the process of creating my own, and am a bit of a control freak, I decided to purchase a copy of Access and start my building my own. Talking with vendors at trade shows, pricing them out to modify their solutions would cost me well over $30,000 dollars. #FILEMAKER PRO 14 TUTORIAL SOFTWARE#The industry specific software available was very expensive to me, contained many features I would never use, and did not have features I wanted. Before FileMaker, I tried to track this information with a couple of flat file databases (Microsoft Works-yeah Works), combined with multiple spreadsheets and Quickbooks. I work by myself and do all the deliveries, service, bookkeeping, accounting, customer interactions - well everything. I own a small heating oil/petroleum delivery business that mostly involves the delivery and tracking of automatic deliveries of petroleum products and service to heating and air conditioning equipment. I started with FileMaker about 5 years ago, purely by accident, jumping in with FileMaker 12. Hopefully some of the tips, based on my experience will help the beginners avoid my errors. I know their pain, because I made some of the same errors. On many of the FileMaker help forums, I see many people who get a copy of FileMaker, jump right in to making their first database and quickly run into trouble and frustration. The beginner just doesn’t have the experience and tools to digest and disseminate the advice offered. While the expert is generous with his or her advice, although perfectly accurate, it sails over the beginners head. I find many times, and this applies to any industry, when experts help beginners, the experts forget what it was like to be a beginner. I was asked to write an article about my experiences, troubles, pitfalls and recommendations to those starting out with FileMaker.
